DJ of the Month: DJ Scott E. Jones – Cleveland Music Group!

Posted on August 1, 2014 by webmaster

DJ Scott E. Jones has been one of the most in-demand special event DJs in the Cleveland, OhioDJ Scott Jones area for years.  He successfully turned his love of music and hosting special events into a full-time, thriving career and is the owner of Cleveland Music Group (formerly Jerry Bruno Productions), a full service multi-op music and entertainment company serving the Northeast Ohio market.  CHAUVET DJ caught up with Scott to learn more about this popular and dynamic Ohio MC/DJ.

CHAUVET DJ:
How did you get started DJing?

CourthouseJumpScott Jones:
I got started DJ’ing back when I was 18. (18 years ago) I had just signed up for my first Credit Card ( Thanks to the local music store: Sam Ash ). On my first trip to the store I maxed out my first credit card with a whopping 5k in charges. It literally took me 5 years to pay it off. Looking back, it was the dumbest thing I’ve ever done, but at the same time, it was the smartest thing I’ve ever done. I took my love for music and jumped in head first. At first it started off as a hobby, something to do for friends and family and quickly turned into a passion that ended up being an amazing career.

What do you qualities do you look for in your DJs?

SJ:
When hiring DJs to be on the JBP/CMG team I look for a few qualities. First and foremost is the love for music. After that you need the drive, passion and professionalism. Experience is always a plus, but not a necessity. Some of my favorite (and best DJs) here at Cleveland Music Group are the DJs I have personally trained. Some of our featured DJs needed only a little fine tuning. Others had to be trained from the ground up. I’ve literally spent 2 months training one of our featured DJs up to almost 2 years. Each DJ is different, the idea is to teach them to feel comfortable, teach them to be confident, teach them to take care of the client. The best way to do that is to show them first hand.

CDJ:
How has lighting contributed to your business?

SJ:
Lighting has been a key factor in the growth of Cleveland Music Group. Formerly known as Jerry Bruno Productions, we only provided music services. Adding special event lighting to our arsenal has been great on so many levels. Our clients can now come to us as a one-stop-shop and we have increased our revenue exponentailly. On average, about 25% of our DJ clients are now adding on some type of lighting package as well.

CDJ:
How do you think lighting effects special events?

SJ:
Lighting is super important for any event. When it comes to the dance floor, it’s a must. Lighting brings movement and excitement to an otherwise dull and boring dance floor. Nothing says boring like some dimmed out can lights and chandeliers. Even if it’s a couple of simple fixtures and color washes. Every DJ needs at least 3-4 Lighting fixtures to help create a little more energy on the dance floor. It helps to encourage dancing, it helps to loosen up the guests. Feature Lighting and UpLighting is great for transforming a space. Lighting makes every room look better, especially those rooms that are boring and square.
