DJ Profile: DJ Cat

Posted on July 2, 2013 by webmaster

Cathryn Miller, aka DJ Cat, is originally from Australia and currently lives in Yemassee, South Carolina where she operates Outback Entertainment. During the week, you can find her on the decks at local clubs and Karaoke bars, but on weekends, she caters to festivals, weddings and events like the Navy Ball on Parris Island. Her DJ business originally began as a way to support animal rescues and still continues to support the cause. Read on and get to know more about your fellow DJ and CHAUVET® DJ VIP member.

1. How and when did you get started as a DJ?
I started DJing at 16 in Alice Springs, Australia. I worked full time in dance clubs all over Australia from Alice Springs, Darwin, Cairns, Brisbane, etc. I moved to the United States in 2001 and started DJing again in 2008.

2. Is this a full-time job or something you do on the side?
This is a part-time job with a large percentage of the money going to support animal rescue. My spare time is spent working with local rescues to assist animals in need. Outback Entertainment was started as a way to raise money for parrot rescue and is now a fundraiser for all animal rescues.

3. What fixtures are included in your setup?
My setup includes a variety of CHAUVET® DJ fixtures including: MiN lasers; 6SPOT and SlimPAR 56 wash lights; 4PLAY, Comet LED and Sweeper LED effect lights; and a Hurricane fog machine. Hopefully, the next purchase I make will be Intimidator Spot LED moving heads —they are very impressive.

4. What is your favorite fixture and why?
For weddings, I am in awe of what the very compact SlimPAR 56 lights are capable of. For clubs, I like to combine my Comet LED, Sweeper LED and 4PLAY effect lights with my lasers.

5. Best advice you can give someone just getting started in the DJ industry?
Take your time and purchase quality equipment. I made the mistake of first purchasing a cheaper lighting and sound option, which are now sitting in a back room. My lighting consists mainly of CHAUVET® DJ gear because of its durability and performance. Yes, the clients will notice quality — the compliments on our systems are frequent and you can always tell a professional DJ by the equipment they use. Get the right equipment the first time around because clients will remember and you will get a lot more work when you are perceived as a professional. Your system is a reflection of yourself.

6. What are your top three most requested songs?
“Wobble” is still a huge hit here in the South. Apart from that, my other most requested songs are “Get Low” by Lil Jon & The East Side Boyz and anything by Rihanna — though this changes month to month.
